Semi-Final Film Overview
A Man Alone: An elderly man accidentally kills his wife and is able to conceal it, but realises that without her, he’s got nothing left to live for. He displaces his guilt onto a long-time gangster, and helps the police to incarcerate him, blurring the ideas of victim, perpetrator, hero and villain. As, when tragedy and loss occurs, all labelling becomes meaningless.
Although the film is fiction, it comes from research into similar tragic accidents, the capture of the Yorkshire Ripper, real personalities and locations. I incorporated these elements of documentary into the plot, characters, and locations. I used actors and non-actors- Martin was played by real-life gangster “Mad” Frank Fraser. All the locations were found, not dressed, and the only major production design for was for the blood/hammer. It is important to me in filmmaking to make visible things that are already in existence, and to find the cinematic in real places. The film was shot in Wapping and Bethnal Green.
I wrote, directed and co-produced, and shot and sound recorded the exteriors. Crew: Rose Hancock (Production), Carolina Marsaij Costa (DOP), Anna Meller (Editing), and Howard Peryer (Sound Design).
